Lip Demo and Little Cups

This video is purposely lost in saturation. Towards the end of the video, you can see the second lipstick I use is a coral but other than that, this video is strategically black and white. This is not about the colors I am using or the products. It is ALL about the: a. tools, b. techniques, c. lines and shapes and d. shading. This is how you get your lip to stand out whether you are rockin a fabulous red or a simple classic nude. This lip i'm applying is a nude with a touch of coral in the center of my lips.

1- Apply a concealer or eye primer to the lip to nude out your natural color and to help hold the lip liner an lipsticks in place.
2- Take your lip liner and start shaping the bow of the lip. Then proceed to shade under neath the line to create depth.
3- Drag lip pencil very very lightly down the lip line towards the corner of the mouth. This shouldn't look like a defined line at all, just a small touch of shade.
4- Move to the bottom lip and start in the center of the bottom lip line and very softly drag the lip pencil up the lip line towards the corners of the mouth. Again, only a soft shade.
5- Softly shade the outer corners of the lip and start shading the space in between where your lips meet. Go all the way from one corner of the mouth to the other.
6- Next I blend the liner with my finger for a very blended look. I want my lips to look full, not lined.
7- I take my nude lipstick and apply it with a longer flat eyeshadow brush because the round edge fits perfectly into the shape of the lip. I use the brush to lightly blend the lip color on.
8- Lastly, I take the same brush and grab my bright coral lipstick and apply the coral color with the brush to the center of my bottom and top lip for a pop.

Taking these steps will give you a natural looking shape and volume to the lips. Not all liner needs to be dramatic. It can be used to emphasize your natural lip shape which in my opinion.. looks better. Enjoy!

Tutorial: Winged Liner and Lash Application

Lets get some awkwardness out of the way. What you are about to see includes a few of my annoying nervous habits.
1. I sniff a lot. And we're talking a lot.
2. I like to play with my hair.
3. I stutter and stumble over my words and say things that probably don't make any sense.
4. I say "uhm" at the beginning of this video. Too much.
5. I have stage fright. Filming this alone was hard just knowing others will be watching it.
For my first video, its not too shabby but I promise they will improve.

Here are some photo's so you can hopefully get a better view of the finished project. I snagged a shot from all angles for ya.

Look with a nude lip...
Hope this was helpful! Please comment with any questions below. Happy Monday! Lets start this week off strong. I am staying motivated by finally posting this video for you.

She's a Nerdy Little Chatterbox.

With how much I've been working over the last two weeks, yesterday was my last day before a day off and I had NO desire to put makeup on or even get ready for that matter. I decided to sleep in a little bit longer, enjoy my current read The Poisonwood Bible make a good breakfast and skip on all the in depth "get ready" work. I still applied a winged liner knowing I had every intention of rocking my favorite nerd glasses where no one would really be able to see the eye makeup I had on. With this type of a look, I ALWAYS have to wear a brighter lip. I decided to search into one of the 3 huge lipstick bags I own and pulled out a lipstick that is an all time favorite and one I haven't worn for quite sometime.

On my eyes I buffed my bronzer and blush along the eyelid followed by a matte eyeshadow called All Races from MAC and my Bobbi Brown Gel liner in Black Ink. The lips are my best accessory (besides my glasses) in colors Trimmed in Pink lip pencil from MAC (this color may be unavailable) and Chatterbox lipstick from MAC.

Color Combinations

I don't know about you but even when a pink pine cone appears in a not too distant tree, I am inspired. These are some of my photo's that I paired with a cosmetic or look that I love.

An orange toned lipstick never hurt anyone. It looks amazing on everyone! Especially those with hazel and green eyes. Try Crosswires from MAC.

Yellow. A bright color that only the bold and brave dare pull off. I snapped this photo while on a hike with a friend back in UT. Aren't these lips gorgeous too?

Blue. This blue nail polish, I Know What Boys Like, from NARS is amazing. A bold statement with a timeless energy.

Purple has always been one of my favorite colors. I love a purple with a bright twist and this NARS lipstick hits the spot. Funny Face.

A soft pink blush is my signature cosmetic item. You can't go wrong with a beautiful soft pink. My favorite? Peony from Bobbi Brown.

Inspirations

The last two weeks were crazy. I taught a two week Advanced Makeup course at a cosmetology school in Mesa Arizona on top of punching the clock at my counter AND doing my best to put together posts for Bloom that would hopefully help and inspire all of you amazing readers. Lets be honest, I'm exhausted. I don't teach the makeup class again until Sept 26th but I am already looking forward to it!

Today I am treating myself to a mani and pedi, getting my car washed because it needs it BADLY inside and out!, get a work out in and before I get ready to go teach a theatrical makeup look tonight, I am going to do a little shopping. A little Trader Jo's fix for some yummy food, H&M (finally! I've only lived her for almost a month and haven't made a trip yet!) and possibly even F21. Its been a while since I've made a visit there too.

I've been using a lot of my creative juices over the last two weeks but I have a lot of stuff planned for you guys! Lash tutorials, winged liner tutorials and I am going to have someone shoot some photo's of me creating my theatrical look tonight as well. I can't wait to show you! So for today, I want to show you some face charts I am working on at work as well as small simple things that are inspiring me today.
Dark lips are in. And having dark nails to match while wearing a soft creme colored chiffon blouse, skinny black jeans and some great heels wouldn't hurt either. My favorite look right now! I chose to do a subtly smoky eye with an emphasis on lines, placement and shading. Notice I make the inner corners/crease of the eyes darker and more defined as opposed to the outer. I made a strong dramatic liner on the bottom, bold lashes on top and strategically placed lashes on the bottom. Take notice to all the small details in the face chart such as shading in corners, creating your own shape with dark lines, blending, etc... Practicing these techniques on paper will not only get your creative juices flowing but it will make it easier for you to replicate onto someone else once you understand how to change the shape of what you start with on a blank piece of paper.
This face chart may still have an hour or so of work left on it. I take my time when I am working on these because I am admittedly a HUGE perfectionist. I am going with a bold bottom lash with nothing on the top except for color. What differences do you notice first between the first face chart and the second? Perhaps the brows? placement of color? I will post a photo of this face chart when I complete it!

Things that are inspiring me today...

DARK NAILS

BLACK and GEMS

MATTE SKIN and DARK VELVET LIPS

FAIR SKIN with a SOFT ATTITUDE.

What is inspiring you?
Yaaay! Off to get some dark nails and hopefully a new outfit because the darling blogger from The Daybook completely inspires me. Her post this morning was wonderful!

Fall Forward: Amber-gris

Amber-gris is a look we are seeing ALL over the runways. Its a mixture of soft, super blended shades with a modern monochromatic twist. Its a new artistic attitude and technique.

I am wearing a more natural finish foundation with a very soft contour and a light blush of coral on the cheek bones, forehead and even a small amount on the nose and chin. I also took more blush and applied it to my eyelids. Soft, blended and bold. To keep the look monochromatic, I used my foundation to nude my lip line then with a flat shadow brush I applied the blush tone to my lips and topped it off with a clear gloss.

I wanted a bold pop with this look so I took a black/brown (possibly a hint of green in there) gel liner that also has gold reflects in it and created a bold winged liner on top then paired it with a bold mascara. I was hoping to have time to apply false lashes for the class I teach at nights but as usual, I lose track of time.

This is one of my favorite trends right now. Its a modern play on colors that can be so natural and defining at the same time. Today is going to be a long busy day but I am very excited to be part of my students photo shoot tonight. I can't believe the two week class is already over! I am gonna miss those guys. Now, I want to share with you my inspiration for today. Well, probably the next couple of days....

NARS created the look for the Marc Jacobs runway show with lead artist being Francois Nars the Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics.

TREND: Strong eyes, glowing skin and nude, glossy lips

What was the inspiration for this look?: “Marc had a lot of images of Patsy Klein, Amy Winehouse, and Cowboy Kate, a book from the 60's whose character Kate had heavy eyelashes," said Founder and Creative Director François Nars. "The complexion is meant to look like it's glowing, like the girls have been dancing, and by eliminating the blush it gives a strange, otherworldly effect. The focus was really on the eye, with a well-defined brow. The combination of different touches creates a decadent, French sensuality and makes the girls more like characters."

The Underground Victorian.

My favorite decade when it comes to makeup? The 20's. I LOVE that deep, sultry, vampy look. Of course this isn't something I wear on an every day basis but when the timing deems appropriate, I am ALL game.

By the 20's women were tired of their colorless existence and makeup was making a huge comeback. Putting on lipstick was soon to become the gesture of the decade. Woman wanted to have a perfect English rose complexion and would bleach their skin and pack on copious amounts of rouge. The woman who chose to ignore the new lipstick and rouge uprising still bleached their skin and used powder to lighten their skin.

Mostly younger women revelled in this onslaught of eyebrow pencils, eyeshadow, mascara, blush and lipstick while polite society recoiled from it. ALL manners and "acting proper" were thrown out the window. Women were acting the way they wanted to act in public and even the most well-bred women could be caught brushing their hair at the table, or leaving lipstick smears on napkins. Now, no girl worth her lipstick would be seen without it.

The last two photo's are from posts: Fall Forward: My Vamp Love and Fall Forward: Cyber Lady.

What decade has been the most influential to you in the makeup world?

SHOUT OUT! My Lovely Bloomers and What Inspires Them.

My followers mean more to me than I know how to properly express in words. I have SO many ideas of what I want to give my readers with this blog and I plan on showing a lot more than just a daily look for inspiration. I have lots of tutorials set up, video's are on the way, product review and suggestion and with Halloween coming up... I want to practice one Halloween themed look a week to get all of you prepared for your scare fest!

In today's post, I want to feature some of my followers, family, and dear friends who have supported me and inspired me to do what I love and stick with it. THIS is what I love. I love interacting with ALL of you, giving you my knowledge and inspiring you with not only cosmetics, but to live your dream. Thank you <3

Katie Plank
Katie and I have known each other since high school but never really became close friends until many years later when we started working at Nordstrom together. She has the most amazing style and who on earth has as much unique and stunning beauty as she? This red lip goes absolutely amazing with her hair color and emphasizes her eye color. I did her bridal makeup for her wedding in the summer of 2011 and am to this day so happy I could be part of her big day.

Katie is wearing Russian Red MAC Lipstick. "I find my inspiration from woman who display a balance between soft feminine touches paired with a comfortable menswear sort of style. Northwestern culture inspires me as well. I rock a style that looks slightly more unkempt. A fairly bare face with a bold lip is what I find most beautiful. Lastly, my cute husband inspires me." -Katie

Jeniece Pratt
Jeniece looks amazing in her lip color Lively by Tarte! I also love love love this photo of her and her darling daughter. "My daughter is the best inspiration!" -Jeniece. I think all moms agree with you there. Thank you so much for your support and sharing your inspiration with me. I look forward to trying all the new products you've recommended to me and I am so glad we share a similar love and interest for cosmetics that are cruelty free, paraben free, and cater to more sensitive skin types. I can't wait to put together that Tarte look!

Nashida Jackson
"One of my favorite lip colors is this fuchsia Mac Lipglass. It's bright, bold and draws mega attention to my full lips! What inspires me? Usually the things I read. Whether they be in magazines, books, or blogs... a lot of times, I like to be the source of inspiration. I am always trying new things!"
You can follow Nashida's fashion blog Inexpensive Chic HERE. Here blog is definitely inspiring and hopefully it can help motivate you whenever you're in a rut!

Chelsea Nelson
Chelsea is a poet, a writer, a cook/food enthusiast, music junkie, a wine lover, puppy mom, a college graduate, a sister, a friend and someone who herself is all inspiring and motivating to those around her. She radiates awesomeness. Chelsea and I met a few years ago through a very dear friend of mine. We hit it off over brunch and have been friends ever since! No matter how crazy life got for Chels, she managed to stay on top. Check out her amazing blog Nosh Maven where she posts restaurant reviews, her own personally cooking adventures and her favorite topics such as living organic and local. She also wrote a book. Thats right. A book! She is the only author I know personally. And I think that's pretty rad.

You can purchase Chelsea's book HERE!

Allie Blair
Allie is rockin the tint Sky Pink from Revlon. Its a matte color and she used a Prestige lipliner in the tint Baby using the shading techniques I have mentioned so many times in my blog! Thank you Allie for using my techniques. SO AWESOME! And I'm glad they work for other people.
Allie and I went to high school together back in the day but never really become friends until later down the road when good old Facebook took off. Now we chat quite regularly and she is one of my top blog followers. I appreciate your input and support so much Allie! Hopefully when I'm back in UT sometime we can get together to create a fun photo shoot look for you!

Maddy Banks
Two things Maddy Darling finds inspiration is Sewing and Makeup and she works hard at each of these almost everyday. This girl is super talented! If you live in Salt Lake City you really need to check out the CUTE sewing school her family owns and she works at. The schools name is The Finishing School and you can find them HERE. " I continue to work really hard at sewing so that my skills will stay where they should be and get closer and closer to my high expectations I have set. As for makeup...I love it but i haven't had that much experience, but I keep practicing! I find it so interesting to see how every person does their own version of different kinds of looks, I think it tells you a lot about a person depending on how they would interepret a 'Smokey eye'. " Maddy was a client of mine back in UT when I worked at a department cosmetic counter. I always loved helping her and I am so so glad we have built a friendship from there. Thank you for being a huge fan Maddy!

Last but not least...
Amy Fromm
Amy and I met back in March 2009 when we flew to Portland Oregon for a 5 day training with MAC Cosmetics. I was instantly drawn to her bubbly, kind and welcoming personality. Also, she has amazing style! She has a loving carefree spirit and takes care of the people around her whether you were childhood friends or met 10 minutes ago. Amy is extremely talented with makeup application and product knowledge and she has a keen eye for fashion. In this photo she is wearing Brick lipliner from MAC and their Viva Glam 1 lipstick. This is a CLASSIC red look. "I am a HUGE sucker for a bold lip. Red is really my fave, it's such a classic, and always makes me feel like a lady."

"What inspires me... HMMM, EVERYTHING! Really - fashion blogs, magazines, beautiful restaurants, customers, art, movies, food, etc. Whenever I have free time I love blog hopping, scoping out Pinterest, or checking out the lastest issue of Zink or Nylon @ Barnes and Noble."

I also love this quote Amy sent me...

"“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” -Gwyneth Paltrow

Here is an image of Amy and I flying to San Francisco for an Impact Team training with MAC. So much fun! And we are rockin some great lips!
You can read Amy's blog at My Name is Amy.

My followers mean more to me than anything and this was an idea I thought up one lazy afternoon as a way to say thank you! I would love to feature more of my followers down the road. I will let you know when I do these posts so you can message me accordingly. Now, its time for some yummy breakfast. Any ideas??

Fall Forward: Short and Sweet

Today's look has a few good examples of poorly done makeup. I will point them out in my photo's. The last two weeks have been so crazy busy and I waited until the very very last second to get ready this morning. Hence the tiny little details in the makeup that went south and the need for my hair to meet a brush.

This look however, is Short and Sweet. A look you can achieve in 20 min if you stay focused in front of the mirror, have a game plan and grab all of your products first. The skin is a soft natural coverage with concealing in specific area's then I applied a light contour with a flush of color on the cheekbones, a highlight in key area's of the face and an eye primer on the eye. The eye is a simple look involving a primer, two shadows (thrown on in literally 2 seconds), an eyeliner on the top water line and top lid, mascara on the top lashes only and false lashes.

EYES
-Eye primer
-A soft highly reflective color on the inner lid, inner crease, inner under eye along lash line and on brow bone.
-The second shadow, a satin finish warm light brown to define the crease yet not a lot of color.
-I used a dark chocolate toned brown pencil liner in my top water line and a black/brown gel liner with gold reflects on the top lid to create a full bold winged liner. I used an angled eyeliner brush for this.
-I then applied a bold mascara to only the top lashes and followed it up by applying MAC's #7 Lashes on the top. I prefer to use DUO glue.
-I left the bottom of the eye mascara-less and completely highlighted for a retro/Twiggy effect. (Without the bold defined crease that was her signature look).

First example of bad makeup. The brow. You may need to click on the photo and open it all the way.

DON'T DO THIS! I'm already laughing at myself for leaving the house like this. Haaaaa.

LIPS
-I wanted the lips to be as natural as possible so I applied a small amount of lip liner in a natural pinkish/red tone to the corners of my lips, the peak of my top lip and the center of my bottom lip then applied a very light full-bodied gloss and blended my lips together.

PSSSH... Who needs a hair brush anyway???

This is a simple look to recreate and I'd say the only area that anyone really needs some good practice in, is the winged liner and lashes. In my case, the brows!

I plan on doing a LASH TUTORIAL in the near future! Please watch for it. If you have any other questions, you know where to find me :). And just so you guys know, I am making the yummiest banana blueberry buckwheat pancakes right now!! What are you having for breakfast?? Happy Tuesday!

Fall Forward: Full of Plum

I've done some vampy looks and some bright looks when it comes to lips. In this post, it is definitely geared more towards the eyes. I tried capturing shots that allowed you to see the shape and placement of the shadows up close as well as from a distance so you can see how it translates into the "look". The eyes are another take on a smoky effect with a bright pop. I wore two different lips with this, a nude pink gloss and a warm berry plum gloss. Which do you prefer?

EYES
-I used a very soft, slightly glittery, light mint green shadow all over the inner lid, the inner corner of the eye, along the bottom inner lash line and a small amount on the brow bone.
-On the brow bone I chose a soft silky skin tone to counteract the sparkle and give a natural shine. I have a very defined brow bone and glitter there is unflattering. plus, I'm not 12 anymore.
-On the center/outer eye lid areas I have on a light/bright matte pink eye shadow. Against the glimmer mint color this already gives the eye some dimension.
-I then took a more matte/silky (no glitter/shimmer) brighter yet warm purple eyeshadow and with a good blending brush applied this to the crease of my eye starting at the outer lid right beneath my crease and blending upwards in circle motions ( NEVER lifting off the skin) up into the crease then did a windshield wiper motion to blend towards the center of the eye above the pupil.
-Next, I lined my water line with a dark chocolate brown eye pencil on both the top and bottom. Then I took a deep smoky purple shadow and lined the bottom of my eyes right along the lash line. I emphasized more color to the outer corners to really lengthen and strengthen my eye shape.
- I then took that same deep dark purplish black smoky shadow and applied it wet onto the outer lid for a huge impact and high drama. I let it dry then I took the same brush, dried it off, and used the tip of the thin flat head brush to buff the dark purple into my crease to mesh with the bright purple I had already applied in the crease area. *This creates a really bold, strong crease and is what is giving my eyes the majority of their shape.
-To create the sharp and defined winged liner, I placed the edge of a bookmark I own along the area next to my eye (place wherever you want your wing to be) and I brushed the brush along the side of the bookmark pushing the tip of the brush with the shadow along the surface of my skin. When you remove the bookmark you will have a strong line. You then have to fill in the "blanks on your own and connect your line to the eye for a wing effect. I only used shadow for this.
-I then applied a great mascara and filled in my brows with a dark brown shadow.

FACE -A moisturizer that will help keep your skin moisturized all day.
-I used a full coverage foundation but I only applied it on the skin where I absolutely needed it and then softly blended it out.
-Blended skin with a soft mineral powder and contoured with a light matte bronzing powder.
-I applied the blush onto the top of my cheek bone for the most color then softly blended up the cheekbone and down onto the apple. this creates a great blend and much more natural look.

LIPS
- I placed a concealer over my lip to lighten the color then applied a light nude gloss. Later, I switched it up and applied a vibrant, yet still sheer, purplish pink gloss. Which do you prefer???

Have I mentioned my camera is being a meany? Poor camera has the flu.

Fall Forward: Play Time

First of all, I would like to apologize for the photo's. I was 1- having camera difficulties yesterday so had no choice but to shoot with something else and 2- I will admit, my day was crazy and I was running late. Can I tell all of you something? I have been so so fortunate over the last month. Not only did I move to Arizona to be with my boyfriend whom I am so enamored with (also, we couldn't be happier!) but my career here is going beautifully. I have been teaching a two week intensive makeup course for a cosmetology school here in AZ and I am working 1-10pm mon-fri. I am LOVING every second of it! I will stay up on all my beauty posts for all you amazing bloomers no matter how crazy the next two weeks get. That being said, here is another fun look for you.

PLAY TIME

This look is all pinks and purples with a very dark chocolate colored eye pencil in the water line and a black gel on the top. I really wish you could see all the detail of the placement of the shadow better. I may recreate this look again this week and shoot it with my other camera so you guys can get a really great in depth look. This weekend when life settles down and I have lots of free time, I will put together a video for perfecting a lip as well as recreating this bright yet smoky eye!

FACE
-Any basic moisturizer and primer
-A Matte foundation over the cheeks, chin, nose, forehead and lightly blended out
-A soft dust of a natural skin finish powder all over
-Contour with a matte light toned bronzer or powder for a soft color and dimension
-Warm the skin up with a blush right on the cheek bone. Softly brush back and forth and last, pop whatever is left on the brush onto the apples of the cheeks.

EYES
-Any eye primer to keep the shadows holding all day (running errands before class in AZ was sweaty and my held up just fine!)
-A soft lighter pink with a glimpse on the inner corner of the eye as well as brow bone for a highlight
-A soft yet bright matte pink shadow all over the lid and up to the crease but not in the crease
-A vibrant plum with a satinish (no glitter or high shine) in the outer lid and crease. Also, bring a little bit of this color on the bottom of the eye along the lashes.
-Take your chocoalte brown liner and line the top and bottom water line.
-Grab an angled liner brush and with a deep dark smoky plum (mine had a little shimmer in it) and line all the way under eye thinly and blended for a smoky effect.
-Take the same dark smoky plum and with a flat head brush with a round tip place this color in the crease and outer lid. This is how I achieved such a strong bold line in my crease that is still blended.
-Grab a sturdy piece of paper, business card?, something with a harsh edge and place the edge from underneath your lashes facing up so you can create a very strong bold "wing" liner with your powder and brush. Cool right? I will capture this on video!
-You can add a little black liner to the top for more drama or leave as is. Apply mascara and your brows and you are good to go! A nice bright yet smoky eye.

Again, I apologize that the photo's don't showcase the eyes very well. I will make it up to you I promise! Hope all of you have an amazing Thursday.
